1 in 26 Keiki
Hawaiʻi Youth Program
1 in 26 KEIKI brings epilepsy awareness, inclusion, and seizure-safety education directly to Hawaiʻi's youth.
Through sports teams, schools, camps, community organizations, and youth programs, we introduce epilepsy in an age-appropriate way while teaching keiki one of the most important lessons of all: a teammate with epilepsy is still a teammate.
Our Mission
1 in 26 KEIKI brings epilepsy awareness, seizure safety and inclusion directly to Hawaiʻi’s youth. Through schools, sports teams, camps and community programs, we create age-appropriate experiences that help keiki understand epilepsy and learn how they can support someone who has a seizure.
Our goal is to replace fear with understanding and help create a generation of young people who know that a medical condition or disability should never determine whether someone belongs on the field, in the classroom or in their community.
KEIKI IN SPORTS
Building safer and more inclusive teams.
Every young athlete deserves the opportunity to feel like they belong. 1 in 26 KEIKI works with youth sports teams, clubs and leagues to bring epilepsy awareness into the places where kids practice, compete and build friendships.
Athletes can learn what epilepsy is, how to respond if a teammate has a seizure and why a diagnosis should never automatically exclude someone from participating in the sport they love.
Coaches and parents can also receive additional seizure-safety education as part of the program.
KEIKI IN THE CLASSROOM
Creating understanding where kids learn.
Epilepsy can be confusing or even frightening to children who have never learned about it. Our school-based programs introduce epilepsy in a simple, age-appropriate way while teaching students that seizures can look different from person to person.
Keiki learn basic seizure safety, when to get an adult and how they can be a supportive friend or classmate to someone living with epilepsy.
COACH & YOUTH LEADER EDUCATION
Coaches, teachers, camp leaders and youth-program staff can play an important role in creating safe and inclusive environments for children living with epilepsy.
We provide educational opportunities that help adults better understand seizures, basic seizure first aid and ways to support a young person with epilepsy without unnecessarily limiting their participation.
ROOTED IN HAWAIʻI
Serving our island communities.
1 in 26 KEIKI was created with Hawaiʻi's children, families and communities in mind. We want epilepsy education to reach young people where they already are—from classrooms and athletic fields to community centers and local events.
By partnering with Hawaiʻi schools, coaches, healthcare professionals, youth organizations and community leaders, we hope to build a more informed and inclusive community for keiki living with epilepsy and other disabilities.
